Brendan Barber Debates With Venture Capitalist Recommending Higher And Fire At Will

Adrian BeecroftAs previously reported by Unionsafety, venture capitalist Adrian Beecroft, Tory party donator of more than £500,000 was paid to write a report for the government on barriers to employment and how to create more jobs by removing employment rights and giving the employer the right to sack any of their workers without recompense and without legal sanction.

The Daily Telegraph earlier this week hosted a debate between Beecroft and the TUC General Secretary Brandan Barber during which Beecroft was accused of wanting to demolish employment rights based on a myth and that the reality was that employment rights was at the bottom of the list of concerns for small employers, with even the Federation of Small Businesses slating the idea of being able to hire and fire at will as sending the wrong message to prospective employees.

The report introduces the idea of the employer being allowed to make a one off payment to a worker they wish to dismiss, and there being no right of the employee to go to an industrial tribunal on the grounds of being dismissed unfairly.

Brendan Barber argues that this is allowing employers to ignore the principle of natural justice and will create a 'hire and fire at will' culture amongst employers and will not secure one additional job as there is no evidence whatsoever that employment protection is a barrier to employment, even by small businesses.

Beecroft also attacks health and safety law by his recommendation that the Gang Masters Regulations, brought in as a result of the deaths by drowning of 21 chinese cockle pickers at Morecambe Bay in 2004, should be abolished on the grounds of cost.
